Drumniall can be approached from a number of directions:
From Tarland / Aberdeen (B 9119) – proceed through Tarland, and follow that road (B 9119) passing the T-junction (signed for Aboyne) just outside the village. Keep straight on for one mile after that, passing ‘The Leys’ on the right after about 2/3 mile (do NOT turn up the small road immediately beside The Leys farm!). The track leading to Upper Ruthven Farm and Drumniall will be on your right about 400 yards beyond The Leys; an obvious stone carved with ‘Drumniall’ will be installed at the track end later in 2014. Proceed up to the top of the track to Drumniall itself, clearly signed, and located in front of the farm buildings.
Intending guests are asked to note that Upper Ruthven is a working farm, so the track carries heavy machinery at times. The surface is metalled but not tarred, so a little care is needed, but normal cars use it all the time. Experience shows that it’s best to keep to the right on the track whilst ascending after the bungalow half way along, and keep left when descending.
From Aberdeen – Braemar main road – arrive at Dinnet, and take road marked ‘Lecht’ at the crossroads adjacent to the Antique Shop. Proceed approximately 2 miles along this road passing the minor crossroads at the hamlet of Ordie. Three hundred yards after Ordie, turn right at the offset junction, signed ‘Aberdeen /Tarland’. Pass Newbigging Farm on your left, 500 yards further on, after a slight bend, the track to Upper Ruthven and Drumniall is on your left, clearly signed. Proceed up track as indicated above.
From Strathdon – follow the main road signed ‘Dinnet’, pass through the village of Logie-Coldstone, and continue for approximately 1.5 miles until you come to a clearly signed crossroads. Turn left onto the road marked ‘Aberdeen / Tarland’. Pass Newbigging Farm on your left, 500 yards beyond, after a slight bend, the track to Upper Ruthven and Drumniall is on your left, clearly signed. Proceed up track as indicated above.
Please note, for unknown reasons GPS seems to be unreliable for locating Upper Ruthven – some visitors using GPS have ended up on a very minor road about a mile from the farm! It is recommended that the directions given above are followed to complete your journey successfully.
For those preferring the use of Ordnance Maps, Upper Ruthven is at Grid Reference NJ 454027 on Sheet 405 ( ‘Aboyne Alford and Strathdon’) of the OS ‘Explorer’ Series
